KUALA LUMPUR: Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung did not quit only on Friday (Oct 2), but has for more than a year conveyed his resignation through his actions, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said Lee showed this by not attending party meetings and not engaging with the Federal Government.
He said it is better for a non-performing MP to resign and leave rather than staying on, but promised that Petaling Jaya parliamentary constituency allocations will continue as planned.
"He resigned a long time ago. You (media) only found out now? He hasn't attended party meetings for a long time. He never attended - he didn't even attend the PKR Congress. So it's appropriate (for him to resign). If he's no longer interested, there's no problem. Leave properly. Thank you for his contributions all this time," said Anwar.
Anwar, who is also PKR president, said he will leave it to the party secretary-general on whether the party will issue a RM10mil summons to Lee for going against party oaths.
The Prime Minister spoke to the media during a visit to the former TUDM staff quarters at the Royal Malaysia Air Force Kuala Lumpur Air Base in Sungai Besi after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Abdullah bin Zubair.
"It's been a long time - for more than a year, he hasn't been involved in party affairs at all. He never attended party meetings, so he didn't attend the Congress either," Anwar said.
He assured that constituency allocations are not affected and that projects for schools, surau, mosques, temples and roads will continue as planned.
"You don't need an MP for that. If he wants to give his views, we can accept them, but it doesn't mean that if an MP resigns, the projects stop," he said.
Anwar added that any legal action against Lee will be left to the secretary-general and the legal committee under Datuk Fuziah Salleh and Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution.
Earlier on Friday (Oct 2), Lee announced his decision to resign as Petaling Jaya MP without any conditions.
He made the announcement during a press conference and said he will issue his resignation letter as a PKR member on Monday (Oct 5).
