Johor writes to Indonesia on worsening haze in state

JOHOR BARU: The Johor government has raised concerns with Indonesian authorities over the worsening transboundary haze as air quality in parts of the state reaches unhealthy levels.

It is learnt that Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi sent a letter to the Indonesian Consulate-General in Johor Baru on Wednesday (Sept 30) expressing concern over the deteriorating air quality.

The haze has affected several parts of the state, particularly Johor Baru, in recent weeks, with visibility remaining poor despite regular heavy rain.

The state government had purportedly stressed to the Indonesian authorities that the prolonged haze had affected the health and well-being of Johoreans, particularly children, the elderly and other vulnerable groups.

It also said the haze had disrupted school and outdoor activities as well as the public’s daily routines.

The state government called for immediate and firm action to address the causes of transboundary haze, including stronger prevention, monitoring and enforcement measures to prevent a recurrence.

It also expressed hope that the matter would be given due attention and thanked all parties for their cooperation in addressing the issue.

The letter is understood to be among the measures taken by the state government to bring the impact of the haze on Johoreans to the attention of the relevant authorities.
