KOTA BARU: Ramlee Mat has proven that hard work and dreams can change one’s fortunes.
From living as a struggling fisherman, the 43-year-old now owns two “perahu kolek” (traditional fishing boats) that do not only provide him with a source of income but also contribute to the tourism industry of Sungai Pengkalan Datu.
“I am very proud because my larger perahu kolek is now worth RM200,000.
“In the past, I only worked as a crew member on a fishing boat.
“Now, I am the owner of a perahu kolek, which has also become a major attraction for tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of Sungai Pengkalan Datu,” he said after the launch of the Dikir Barat Perahu Kolek event at the Tanjung Kuala Sabak Jetty here yesterday.
His larger perahu kolek, measuring 12.2m in length and 3m in width, is now majestically docked at the jetty.
With its captivating colourful designs, the boat is more than just a vessel – it stands as a symbol of Ramlee’s transformed life as he becomes increasingly active in the state’s tourism sector, Bernama reported.
“Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), my perahu kolek service has received an extraordinary response, especially during the school holidays.
“Not only do I personally benefit from it; it has also created economic opportunities for local residents,” he said.
The perahu kolek, a heritage craft of fishermen at Kampung Sabak Beach, is known for its unique characteristics.
Adorned with colourful “awan larat” designs (cloud motifs), this boat connects travellers with the rich history and culture of Kelantan while showcasing the beauty of its natural surroundings.
Ramlee, who hails from Kampung Kuala Sabak, Pengkalan Chepa, expressed his desire to continue being involved in the state’s tourism sector.
“The river cruise service I offer is affordable and moves at a leisurely pace, giving tourists the chance to truly immerse themselves in the serenity and beauty of nature,” he said.
