87 houses razed, 148 inhabitable after repairs

SUBANG JAYA: The gas pipeline inferno has totally destroyed 87 houses in the Putra Heights area.

Another 148 damaged houses were found to be inhabitable after repairs, said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

A total of 308 families involving 1,254 victims have been identified and registered, he told a press conference after chairing the state disaster management committee meeting yesterday.

The meeting involved 39 state and federal agencies.

Victims are being treated at the intensive care units of Hospital Ampang and Hospital Kuala Lumpur due to smoke inhalation that has affected their lungs.

A total of 630 victims from 157 families are currently occupying two temporary evacuation centres, namely at the Putra Heights Mosque multi-purpose hall and the Subang Jaya City Council multi-purpose hall.

The remaining 624 victims from 151 families have chosen to find their own accommodations.

The Mentri Besar said there will be stricter controls at the temporary relief centres with daily press conferences to keep the public updated.

Visitors’ movements at the temporary evacuation centres will now be monitored by the Social Welfare Department, which will arrange for meetings with victims.

“Those who wish to donate goods and services are advised to contact JKM. These evacuation centres are becoming places for people to discard their unwanted things,” Amirudin said.
