Penang cops nab 10 after fireworks dispute sparks brawl


GEORGE TOWN: Ten people have been arrested here after a brawl over the sale of fireworks.

Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the male suspects, aged 15 to 41, got into a dispute over two premises selling fireworks in Sungai Ara in Bayan Lepas at 10.15pm on Monday (March 31).

"We received information about a fight and arrested 10 men who were believed to be involved in the incident.

"The dispute was over two shops selling there.

"The suspects have been arrested and are on remand for three days to assist with the investigation," he said in a statement on Tuesday (April 1).

ACP Sazalee said the remand will end on Thursday (April 3).

"The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.

"The charge carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to five years, a fine or both if found guilty," he said.

He also urged the public not to speculate about the case while investigations are being carried out.
