KUALA LUMPUR: A mother and her son have pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court to two counts of abusing her grandchildren, resulting in injuries to the children.
The 65-year-old woman and her 29-year-old son were jointly charged with abusing two brothers, aged eight and six.
They entered their not guilty pleas before judge Tasnim Abu Bakar on Friday (March 28).
The alleged offences took place at a house in Sentul between January and March.
Both were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, they face a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to 20 years in prison, or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi offered bail at RM10,000 with one surety each and requested additional conditions, including prohibiting contact with witnesses and victims, monthly police check-ins, and the surrender of their passports until the case is resolved.
Defence lawyer Ridzuan Sihat appealed for a lower bail, noting that the mother was unemployed, while the son, a salesperson, was financially responsible for his daughter and five nieces and nephews.
"The victims are the woman's grandchildren and the son’s nephews, who were under their care," he said.
Judge Tasnim set bail at RM7,000 with one surety each and allowed all additional conditions sought by the prosecution.
The case is scheduled for mention on April 24.
