Teen's family want cops to conduct thorough investigation into death

GEORGE TOWN: The family of a 17-year-old accident victim who died last month while on his way home wants the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into their son’s death.

Thomas Ch’ng Kai Hen who was awaiting his SPM results was killed at the scene when a Vietnamese woman, suspected of drunk driving, ploughed into him and his friends who were walking along Jalan Jelutong on February 19.

One of his friends was unharmed, while another suffered injuries.

The deceased father, Ch’ng Hock Soo,54, a businessman said after more than a month of waiting, he was baffled as to why the suspect who was allegedly intoxicated while driving was not charged in court.

During a press conference at the Penang DAP headquarters on Sunday (March 23), he said the police informed him that they were awaiting the results of the chemical report.

He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and hoped the suspect would be charged soon.

Present during the press conference were Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, Batu Lanchang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong and the family lawyer Andy Ooi.

Rayer expressed his understanding of the family's trauma and grief over losing their son, who had just completed his SPM, while the alleged driver remained free without any action taken.

"She is still walking free, posing a danger to other road users, especially pedestrians," he said.

Rayer also hoped that the suspect would be arrested and charged soon.
