Flood relief efforts ongoing as 86 families remain in Beaufort centres


KOTA KINABALU: Only 86 families remain in two relief centres in flood-hit Beaufort, while displaced residents in Keningau and Sipitang were allowed to return home on Sunday (Mar 23).

As of 4pm, 304 evacuees from eight villages in Beaufort are taking shelter at Dewan DSP Dun Banir and Dewan Selagon relief centres.

Meanwhile, 44 evacuees at the Dewan Dato’ Angian Andulang relief centre in Apin-Apin, Keningau, and 81 at the Sipitang Multipurpose Hall were cleared to return home when the evacuation centres closed at 12pm and 3pm, respectively.

In another development, the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has assured continued support for flood-affected schools in Sabah, with funds allocated for previously impacted institutions and ongoing assessments for recent damages.

This marks the third wave of flooding in Sabah this year, following incidents in mid-January, February, and early March.

In January, 23 schools in Sabah were among 93 nationwide forced to close, with subsequent floods further damaging infrastructure.

Fadhlina reaffirmed the government’s commitment to assisting affected schools and ensuring a safe learning environment.
