Better if Warisan goes solo in state polls, says Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: Contesting solo in the upcoming state election is the best option for Parti Warisan, says Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

“I have had extensive experience working with various coalitions, there is no coalition I have not been part of. But now, I believe it is time for clarity, a clear direction, and strategies to improve the welfare of the people in Sabah,” said the Warisan president.

Speaking after breaking fast at the Kampung Lentigi Mosque in Kota Belud on Friday (March 21), Shafie said that Warisan is committed to standing independently.

“The time has come for Sabahans to realise that their future should not be dictated by political pressures and alliances that come with demands and conditions,” he said.

The former Sabah chief minister stressed that governance should prioritise the people's welfare rather than political bargaining.

“What unites the people of Sabah are their fundamental needs such as healthcare, education, employment, housing, and basic amenities like electricity and clean water,” he said.

He added that many developed nations function under a stable two-party system, ensuring clearer governance.

“Instead of focusing on who gets ministerial posts, project allocations, or timber concessions, we must prioritise the needs of the people,” he added.

Shafie then asked why many Sabahans must seek opportunities elsewhere despite the state’s abundant resources.

“Sabah is rich, yet nearly 300,000 of our young people are working in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. We must create opportunities here so they can stay with their families and build a future at home,” he said.

He reaffirmed Warisan’s commitment to providing a clear vision for Sabah’s development.

“This is about ensuring a better future for our people, without being tied to political compromises that do not serve their best interests,” he said.
