Floods: Over 13,000 relocated to relief centres in Johor


JOHOR BARU: More than 13,000 people have been relocated to temporary relief centres in Johor following continuous rain that hit the state last Wednesday.

The Johor Disaster Management Committee said that as of 8am on Saturday (March 22), a total of 95 relief centres were in operation across six flood-affected districts.

“There are currently 13,089 individuals from 3,749 families who have been evacuated to relief centres.

“The majority of victims are in Johor Baru, with 5,402 people, followed by Kluang with 2,458,” it said in a statement.

The other flood-affected districts are Pontian (1,782), Kota Tinggi (1,690), Kulai (1,531) and Batu Pahat (226).

The relief centre with the highest number of evacuees are SK Kampung Pasir and SK Bukit Mutiara in Johor Baru, housing 790 people and 553 people respectively and SMK Senai in Kulai with 502 people.

According to a Bernama report, In SARAWAK, the number of residents evacuated due to the floods has increased to 969 people this morning from 435 people on Friday

The State Disaster Management Committee reported that another relief centre has been opened in Sibu, bringing the total number of evacuees in the district to 352 people, while 617 people have been evacuated in the Kapit district.

In SABAH, there is no change in the number of flood victims, with 379 people from 124 families still at eight relief centres as of 8am on Saturday (March 22).

According to the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, the relief centres are opened in six districts in Sabah, namely Beluran, Sandakan, Paitan, Pitas, Keningau and Sipitang.
