Johor floods force more evacuations, over 11,000 victims in 100 relief centres


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor continues to increase with Batu Pahat being the latest district to be affected by the floods here.

According to the state Disaster Management Committee, a total of 11,964 people from 3,594 families had been sent to flood relief centres across six districts as of 6pm on Friday (March 21).

“The number of flood evacuees has gone up from 10,763 people reported as of 8am the same day.

"This includes 45 people in Batu Pahat, the latest district affected by the floods," it said in a statement here.

It added that there are currently 100 active temporary flood relief centres, including one in Batu Pahat.

Johor Baru remains the district with the highest number of flood evacuees, with 4,384 people.

"This is followed by Kluang with 2,734, Kota Tinggi with 1,661, Pontian with 1,886 and Kulai with 1,274," it said.

According to committee chairman Tan Sri Dr. Azmi Rohani, five rivers have exceeded the danger level. 

“Sungai Lenik, Ladang Chaah in Batu Pahat (7.04m); Sungai Kahang, Kampung Contoh, Kluang (15.92m); Sungai Siam, Kampung Sungai Siam, Kulai (20.94m); Sungai Pulai, Kampung Ulu Pulai, Pontian (3.09m) and Sungai Paya Dato, Mersing (2.07 m)," he said in a statement Friday.

Azmi also noted that two roads in Kota Tinggi, namely Jalan Lukut Cina (Taman Aman) and Jalan Mawai Lama (near Rumah Burung) as well as Jalan Jabi Bukit Tempurung (Jalan Negeri) in Segamat have been closed to all vehicles due to flooding.
