BANGKOK: Intensifying monsoon rain will place parts of four Thai regions at risk of flash floods, forest run-off and temporary inundation during a five-day period beginning on Saturday (Aug 29).
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued Weather Advisory No. 6 (173/2026) at 5am on Saturday, warning of isolated heavy to very heavy rain until Wednesday (Sept 2).
Areas requiring particular vigilance include the western parts of the North and Central region, the upper and eastern parts of the Northeast, and the East.
The increased rainfall will be driven by a monsoon trough moving southwards across the North and upper Northeast towards an active low-pressure cell over the coast of upper Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin. A rather strong southwest monsoon is also prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
The TMD warned that heavy and accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods and forest run-off, particularly on foothill slopes near waterways and in low-lying areas.
Residents should avoid routes repeatedly affected by flooding, especially across low-lying land where short-term inundation may occur.
People in the affected regions were advised to plan their daily activities and journeys carefully and continue monitoring official weather announcements.
Waves in the upper Andaman Sea will reach two to three metres and rise above three metres during thunderstorms.
The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will have waves of about two metres, increasing beyond two metres in stormy areas.
Mariners in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand should proceed cautiously and avoid thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore throughout the warning period.
