Three killed in five-vehicle crash on NSE

ALOR SETAR: Three people were killed and several others were injured in a five-vehicle accident at KM58.4 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) near Pendang during the wee hours on Wednesday.

Pendang Fire and Rescue Station chief Zulkifli Manaf said three of the deceased were found in a sedan car at the scene at 3.24am.

"Firemen found three victims trapped in the car upon arrival and they were confirmed dead on the scene.

"Two other victims who were in a pickup truck suffered injuries.

"Firemen had to use special tools to extricate the trapped victims and the injured victims were sent to hospital by ambulance," he said.

Pendang OCPD Supt Rodzi Abu Hassan said the deceased car driver aged 27, and three passengers aged between 26 and 32 were on their way from Pendang to Jitra.

He said the driver had lost control of the car while trying to avoid a parked lorry before colliding into other lorries at the scene, where road repair works were being conducted.

A pickup truck coming from behind then failed to avoid and rammed into them, eventually causing a pileup of a sedan, three lorries and a pickup truck, he added.
