PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has agreed that a comprehensive study should be carried out before any decision is made to limit the prime minister's tenure to 10 years, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
"The Prime Minister has instructed that a detailed study is done before any decision on the matter," the government spokesman and Communications Minister said during his weekly post-Cabinet briefing here on Wednesday (March 19).
Fahmi said discussions on limiting the tenure of the prime minister are still at an early stage.

"It involves complex and complicated matters and also needs the consensus of the respective states.
"It also needs in-depth study (to see) if it involves amendments to the Federal Constitution," he added.
On Sunday (March 16), Anwar supported a bold proposal to limit Malaysia’s prime ministerial tenure to 10 years.
However, he stressed that discussions were ongoing to gain the support of all parties before moving forward.

According to Anwar, Pakatan Harapan fully supports the proposal but it is important to negotiate and build consensus before making any amendment.
The proposal to limit the prime minister's tenure to two parliamentary terms was raised by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke at the party's annual general assembly.
On Wednesday, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said that in Islam, leadership is sacred and not a temporary position, decided by God and not to be passed to the next individual for personal gain.
