JPJ officer’s bribery sentence suspended

MELAKA: A Road Transport Department (JPJ) officer can spend his Hari Raya with his family after he was granted a stay of execution on his one-year prison sentence and RM80,000 fine.

Sessions Court judge Elesabet Paya Wan handed down the sentence after finding Che Fadzlie Izwan Che Johari, 38, guilty of offering bribes as inducements for not taking action against an overloaded lorry operator about six years ago.

The judge said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt on the charges and rebut the statutory presumption under Section 50(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act.

According to the eight charges, the accused was found guilty of giving a total of RM4,250 in bribes to other JPJ officers as an inducement not to take action against lorry operators who violated overloading regulations.

All the offences were committed at three different locations within the JPJ complex at Bukit Katil in the Melaka Tengah district between Jan 1, 2019 and Dec 31, 2020.
