Foreign ‘cricket team’ denied entry

PETALING JAYA: A group of Bangladeshis claiming to be cricketers arriving for a tournament was denied entry after the agency concerned detected discrepancies.

The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the 15 men were stopped at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Monday.

In a statement yesterday, it said the group claimed to be a cricket team who were to take part in a tournament.

“Upon further investigation, it was found that the letter allegedly issued by the Penang Cricket Association was false.

“There were also no scheduled cricket events from March 21 to March 23 as they claimed,” the statement said.

AKPS said when the supposed “sponsor” of the tournament arrived, no information was provided about the event with the person claiming only to be a representative of the company concerned.

“It is possible that the group was part of a syndicate that masqueraded as cricket players to enter the country for other purposes,” it added.

AKPS said the group was then issued a Not To Land (NTL) order.

It warned that strict action will be taken on any individual or syndicate that misuses sports visas for purposes such as illegal employment or human trafficking.
