BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Two Bangladeshi men have been sentenced to jail and caning for overstaying in the country after their immigration passes had expired, the Immigration and National Registration Department said.

In a statement, the department under the Ministry of Home Affairs said the cases were prosecuted under Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act (Chapter 17), which covers offences of remaining in the country beyond the validity of an immigration pass.

Khalilur Rahman Masum, 25, was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane after pleading guilty. The sentence took effect on April 6, 2026.

In a separate case, Jahed Ali, 44, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane, also after pleading guilty. His sentence likewise commenced on April 6.

The department urged members of the public with information on immigration offenders to come forward and assist enforcement efforts by contacting its hotline lines in Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuala Belait. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
