PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed agreement with a proposal to limit the Prime Minister's tenure to 10 years.
He highlighted the need for bipartisan support to secure a two-thirds parliamentary majority for constitutional amendments.
"There is a proposal and I agree with it, to limit the Prime Minister's tenure to 10 years. As we know, it can currently extend up to 22 years. I agree with the limitation," said Anwar at DAP’s national congress on Sunday (March 16).
However, he stressed that discussions were ongoing to gain the support of all parties before moving forward.
"Do not worry, there is no chance I will want to continue after 10 years. Even after just two years, I am already exhausted," he said.
According to Anwar, Pakatan Harapan fully supports the proposal but emphasised the importance of negotiation and consensus-building before making any amendments.
"We must build this through discussions and agreement. We need to explain, and we need to listen. Once there is readiness, we will secure a two-thirds majority.
"If we can obtain this majority, we can even proceed with the amendment in the next parliamentary session," he stated.
The Prime Minister also cautioned against tabling the motion prematurely without sufficient backing, citing concerns over opposition parties’ stance on constitutional amendments.
"Do not bring forth a motion unless the numbers are secured because we cannot trust what the opposition claims. Their stance on such matters can change over time," Anwar said.
