MUAR: A 58-year-old local woman lost RM412,443 to an online investment scam after being lured by promises of lucrative returns.
Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said that according to police reports, the victim received a message via WhatsApp from an unknown individual offering an investment opportunity.
Intrigued by the prospect, she downloaded an investment application as instructed.
"The victim initially invested RM500 and saw a profit of RM67 within 24 hours.
"Encouraged by the fast returns, she continued investing, transferring money into seven different bank accounts through 35 transactions between Jan 23 and March 6,” he said in a statement here Saturday (March 15).
The woman only realised she had been scammed when she was asked to make additional payments to withdraw her accumulated profits.
“Upon checking the investment application, she found that there were no actual returns on her investments. The funds she used were from her personal savings,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
ACP Raiz Mukhliz urged the public to remain vigilant and cautious when dealing with financial transactions, especially those promising high returns.
"We advise people to follow updates on scams through the official social media channels of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to stay informed about scammers' modus operandi," he said.
