HFMD cases on the rise in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu recorded 533 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) between Jan 1 and March 8, said State Local Government, Housing and Health Committee chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah.

He stated that Kuala Terengganu logged the highest number of cases, with 198, followed by Kuala Nerus (66), Setiu (57), Dungun (55), Marang (47), Hulu Terengganu (45), Kemaman (38) and Besut (27).

"The number of HFMD cases has increased by 100 compared to the same period last year. So far, 10 clusters have been reported, including nine in daycare centres and one in a kindergarten.

"A cluster is defined when there are two or more cases in a single locality with epidemiology links occurring within the HFMD incubation period," he said in a statement on Friday (March 14).

Wan Sukairi advised the public, especially parents, to take preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease, including avoiding taking children with infection to public places and maintaining proper hygiene. – Bernama
