Sabah JPJ to go undercover to ensure driver compliance ahead of Raya festive season

KOTA KINABALU: Undercover enforcement officials will be stationed in various locations including in public transports to ensure that drivers adhere to road regulations in the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Sabah Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Mohd Harris Ali said this is among the initiatives to be taken in view of the festive season.

Other than that, they are also planning a statewide roadblock operation especially in hotspot areas, he said after a Jelajah Ramadan function at the JPJ headquarters in Bundusan near here on Wednesday (March 12).

He said some 200 to 300 JPJ officials will be on duty throughout the festive season in the state.

“This coming operation is to help curb accidents and ensure better road safety among drivers and users,” said Harris, adding that accident-prone areas will be given extra focus.

He said the JPJ is expected to introduce a road ban on heavy vehicles as well.

“This is a ban on cargo or goods vehicles but its implementation will be announced after our meeting soon,” he said.

To ensure that public transport such as buses abide by the rules during this festive season, the Sabah JPJ will be stationed at main terminals to inspect buses prior to departure and this is part of standard operating procedures, said Harris.

He said while enforcement was important and will be a priority, it was also necessary to advocate for road safety practices among users.

“We want to create awareness on the importance of following road regulations and ensuring that vehicles are in good condition before any drive back home for the holidays,” he added.
