Sarawak marine cops seize over RM5.5mil in smuggled goods

SIBU: Sarawak marine police have seized smuggled goods worth a total of RM5,560,907 in two separate operations under Ops Taring Landai in Bintulu and Miri.

State Marine Police Region 5 Commander Asst Comm Ab Rahman Mat Hasan (pic) said the first raid took place at 10.40am on March 5 when a team from the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) PPM W5 Bintulu inspected an unnumbered room in Jalan Sungai Nyigu, Bintulu.

The operation uncovered various alcoholic beverages and cigarettes without tax labels and stamps from the Customs Department.

"The seized goods, valued at RM4,543,000, were confiscated as they were in violation of the Customs Act 1967," he said in a statement on Thursday (March 6)

In the second operation, which took place earlier at 8am the same day, its Miri team raided a store in Desa Indah 3, Permyjaya, Miri.

Further inspection uncovered a variety of untaxed cigarettes and liquor stored without tax labels or official Customs stamps.

"After waiting for about an hour, no individual came forward to claim ownership of the goods. As a result, all items were seized under the Customs Act 1967," said ACP Ab Rahman, adding that the confiscated goods are estimated to be worth RM1,017,907.

"We will continue to intensify enforcement efforts to combat the illegal trade of untaxed goods and safeguard the country's revenue," he said.

Both cases remain under investigation.
