PETALING JAYA: Two MPs have urged action against those who mock other religions.
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has called for action against an independent preacher, saying investigations with a view to prosecute him should commence without any delay.
"Failure to do so will likely result in him creating further unrest and tensions between communities of different religious beliefs in this country.
“His comments on his post, in which he touched on the Hindu practice of carrying the kavadi during Thaipusam are grossly irresponsible and insensitive, which is further aggravated by the fact that such comments were made so soon after insults were made by the Era FM DJs who, at least, have apologised for their behaviour.
"His comments are clearly in violation of various laws such as Sections 504 and 505 of the Penal Code which merit immediate investigations," said Ramkarpal in a statement on Thursday (March 6).
Meanwhile, Tapah MP Datuk Seri M. Saravanan has called on the government to act swiftly against those who smear religion on social media, without fear or favour, as this trend has the potential to destroy the nation’s peace and harmony.
“People like him have a long track record of making inflammatory remarks that sow discord among Malaysians, and at the same time, action must also be taken against other individuals who have insulted and criticised Islam.
“Just as we condemn those who mock Hinduism, we must also be firm against those who disrespect any other religion.
“What we need is consistency in action. There cannot be selective enforcement regarding matters of racial and religious sensitivity,” he said, adding that the government must apply the law fairly.
Saravanan also said that the proposed suspension of Era FM radio station by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would affect the livelihood of the entire staff.
“The radio station has issued a public apology and taken action against those concerned.
“We are worried that suspending the entire radio station would involve the livelihood of many.
“This will be unfair to other staff members,” said Saravanan in a statement on Thursday (March 6).
On Wednesday (March 5), MCMC said a notice of intent to suspend Era FM’s licence had been issued to the station’s licence holder, who was given 30 days to submit a response before any decision was made.
The three Era FM DJs were involved in a recent viral video in which they were seen mocking a Hindu ceremony.
