Johor Immigration arrests 75 illegal immigrants in two operations


JOHOR BARU: The state Immigration Department has detained 75 illegal immigrants during a two-day operation held in two separate locations here.

State director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said a majority of the foreigners detained in the operation held on Tuesday (March 4) and Wednesday were Myanmar and Indonesian nationals.

“In the first operation carried out at 3pm around Pandan wholesale market area here, which is a known hot spot, the department’s enforcement unit inspected 20 premises and 66 individuals.

“From the number of individuals we check, 35 of them have been detained for various immigration offences,” he said here on Thursday.

Mohd Rusdi added in the second operation held around Bandar Baru Permas Jaya at 12.30am, nine shophouses were inspected and 64 foreigners questioned.

“In the second operation, the department detained 40 illegal immigrants,” he said, adding that the operation was carried out following public complaints on a high number of foreigners working without documents.

Mohd Rusdi said the overall arrests were 30 Myanmar nationals including nine females, 30 Indonesians including 19 females, 11 male Bangladeshis, two male Pakistanis and two male Vietnamese, aged between 18 and 55 years.

He added that those detained were for offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Rules 1963.

“During the operation, the department also issued seven notices to individuals to assist with our investigations. Those detained have been placed at the Immigration Depot in Setia Tropika here for further action,” he said.
