Woman killed in landslide while son escapes unhurt

KOTA KINABALU: A woman was killed while her son escaped unhurt after a landslide buried their house in Kampung Lok Bonu, Jalan Sepanggar, early Wednesday (March 5) morning.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 4.32am.

A team from the Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched, arriving at 4.49am, approximately 23 kilometres away.

Operations commander PBK II KUP Musa Kunjan said the landslide completely destroyed a non-permanent house measuring 10x15 metres.

“There were two victims involved. A 53-year-old woman was buried in the landslide and was successfully extricated by the rescue team, but she was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.

The body was later handed over to the police for further action.

“A 25-year-old man managed to escape unhurt," he said in a statement.

The operation, involving 10 personnel and two fire engines, including an FRT and EMRS unit, was brought under control at 6am.

It officially concluded an hour later after authorities ensured no further danger at the site.

The police are currently investigating the incident.
