Two hurt after fire razes workers’ quarters in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Two people sustained burns when their workers’ quarters caught fire at Penampang Baru near here on Sunday (March 2) afternoon.

The victims, a man aged 63 and a 59-year-old woman, suffered burns from running out of the burning structure at around 1pm.

Penampang Fire Station chief Zeno Tingalan said a team from the Penampang fire station and a backup unit from Putatan were dispatched after receiving a distress call on the incident at 1.10pm.

He said the fire involved five blocks of non-permanent structures, whereby each block comprised a total of 38 rooms respectively.

“The two victims were given preliminary treatment by medical officials on site before they were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further care,” he said.

Zeno said firemen managed to bring the flames under control at around 2.20pm while operations ceased around 3.30pm.

He said the firemen concluded their operations on-site after ensuring there were no more hazardous elements at the scene.
