Kedah MB Sanusi acquitted of sedition charges


SHAH ALAM: Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, was acquitted and discharged (DNA) by the High Court here on Monday (Feb 24), regarding a sedition case involving remarks about the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, made during a political speech in July two years ago.

Sinar Harian reported that Judge Datuk Aslam Zainuddin made the decision following the prosecution's announcement that they did not intend to proceed with the case against Sanusi, 51.

On July 18, 2023, the Jeneri assemblyman from Kedah pleaded not guilty at the Selayang Sessions Court to two charges related to the case.

Sanusi, also the Election Director for Perikatan Nasional (PN), was accused of making seditious remarks concerning the Sultan of Selangor and the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara-Kampung Bendahara, Gombak, at 11pm on July 11, 2023.

Both offences were charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, punishable under Section 4(1) of the same Act, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or a maximum of three years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.

On Feb 1, 2024, the trial for the two cases was transferred to be heard together at the High Court here.

On Sept 26 last year, the Sultan of Selangor accepted an apology from Sanusi.
