Missing Sandakan teen found dead four days after prawn-catching trip

KOTA KINABALU: A missing teenager’s body has been found, four days after a tragic prawn-catching trip in Sandakan drew out a search by rescue and his family.

The 14-year-old victim was discovered by villagers some 20km from where he was last seen, near Tanjung Semawang, at around 6.30am, Wednesday (Feb 19).

Sandakan Fire Station chief Severinus@Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said search and rescuers went to retrieve the body upon receiving information of its discovery.

“The body was handed over to the police thereafter for further action,” he said in a statement.

He said they had received an emergency call about the missing boy at around 6.39am, Sunday.

He had gone to catch prawns with some friends a day earlier but failed to return home that afternoon as promised.

His family and friends mounted a search for him but could only find the boat he was using and a cap floating nearby.

They lodged a report a day later after failing to locate the victim.
