Police dismantle local drug syndicate in Kedah

ALOR SETAR: Police have dismantled a drug syndicate here with the arrest of a man and the seizure of drugs worth RM4.12mil.

Kedah police chief Datuk Comm Fisol Saleh said the 46-year-old suspect from Johor was arrested by a team from the Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department at the roadside of Pusat Perniagaan Zamrud in Sungai Petani at about 7am on Feb 16.

"A body search on the suspect led to the seizure of a key, which resulted in the discovery of various drugs in the boot of the car," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 18).

Comm Fisol said checks on the car at the Pusat Perniagaan Zamrud parking lot found drugs believed to be syabu weighing about 51,000g and MDMA pills weighing about 14,900g in three orange canvas bags and one large blue bag.

The total drug seizure was RM4.12mil.

The seized syabu could be used by 255,000 drug addicts, while the MDMA pills could be used by 28,000 drug addicts.

Comm Fisol said checks on the suspect's records found no prior criminal or drug records.

He added that police are still investigating the case.

"The suspect has been remanded for seven days beginning February 17 until February 23," he said, adding that the case will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
