PAS president wants more use of Malay language in official matters

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang) lamented the underuse of the Malay language in Malaysia, particularly in official matters and major events, where its presence remains minimal.

"Malay is still sidelined in this country, and foreign languages are given priority, even in government affairs," he said.

"Look at what’s happening today—shops in the city and capital use all kinds of languages, and sometimes Malay is barely used. English is more prominent, even though there are no more English speakers here.

"In events, there are only three foreigners, yet the rest of us, (Malaysians), speak Malay, but still use English. Official letters and court proceedings still (use English)."

He also pointed out that other countries, like those at the United Nations, have leaders who speak in their native languages, while Malaysian leaders speak in English.

"Except for countries that were colonised, like those in Latin America who speak Spanish, and English-speaking nations, their leaders speak their language," he said.

"That’s why empowering the national language is crucial and needs to be recognised," he added during the Royal Address debate in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Feb 18).

Meanwhile, he also called for a review of the Dewan Rakyat’s rules to ensure fair debate.

The PAS president claimed there were many spontaneous rules implemented when the opposition raised issues, which he argued contradicted Islamic principles.

“When the opposition wants to criticise or express anger, new rules are made. It shouldn't be like this. Unless they’re using vulgar or harsh language,” he added.
