Details of new electricity tariff still under review, says DPM

KUALA LUMPUR: The details of the new electric tariff are still under review, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He also said that the matter is still being finalised by the Energy Commission and the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, which is expected to be implemented starting July 1.

“The new tariffs are still under review, as the commission is currently conducting studies to ascertain the most feasible rates,” he said in a written parliamentary answer on Tuesday (Feb 18).

Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, was responding to a question by Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) who had asked the ministry to state the details on the new electricity tariff and its effects on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Fadillah reassured that the new electricity tariff schedule will have minimal impact on MSMEs in Peninsular Malaysia, ensuring that these businesses remain competitive and viable in the evolving economic landscape.

“The government is committed to ensuring that any potential increase will not unduly burden the citizens, taking into account all aspects including the welfare and well-being of the rakyat.

“This includes 85% of domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will continue to be protected through targeted electricity subsidies,” he said.

Previously, it was reported that the base electricity tariff in Peninsular Malaysia will go up by 14.2% to 45.62sen per kilowatt-hour from July.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had stressed that the tariff hike would not affect 85% of households in the country but only the industries and the rich.
