YANGON: The Ministry of Electric Power (MOEP) has announced the new tariff rates by tier, and industrial and businesses outside industrial zones can apply to receive 24-hour electricity at 900 kyats (US$0.43) per unit just like the industrial zones.
The Ministry of Electric Power, exercising the authority conferred under Section 72 Sub-section b of the Electricity Law, and in accordance with Section 41 of the Electricity Law, has issued Notification No. (89/2026) on the tariff rates for electricity on February 27, 2026, with the approval of the Union Government.
Electricity generated by liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plants that can be directly supplied to electricity consumers in industrial zones and special economic zones that are charged at non-domestic rates will be supplied 24 hours a day without load shedding, except in the event of a line fault and system breakdown.
A fixed electricity rate of 900 kyats per unit will be charged for this electricity.
Industrial and business enterprises located outside the industrial zones and special economic zones will be provided with electricity 24 hours a day by paying the above fixed electricity rate of 900 kyats per unit if they submit their request to the department.
However, depending on the power generation capacity of the existing power plants and the power transmission capacity of the power lines, the public and industrial/business enterprises that are currently receiving regular electricity transmission and distribution will continue to be charged at the current electricity rate (set according to the two tiers of household and non-household types) without any changes.
The electricity rate to be charged by type of electricity consumer is as follows: household type (household, household power, single unit (household), religious building without business) 50 kyats for one unit to 50 units, 100 kyats for 51 to 100 units, 150 kyats for 101 to 200 units, and 300 kyats for 201 units and above, which is unchanged from the current rate.
For non-household use (industries, businesses, one-off, temporary, street lighting, government offices, state-owned industries, state-owned businesses, river water supply, municipal offices and industries, non-governmental organisations, foreign embassies and international organisations), the rates are as per following: 250 kyats for 1 to 5,000 units, 400 kyats for 5001 to 20,000 units, and 500 kyats for 20,001 units and above, which is unchanged from the current rate.
If power generation and distribution are not able to cope, there may be power outages (load shed). Industrial and business establishments located outside industrial zones and special economic zones will be charged a fixed rate of 900 kyats per unit and will be provided with electricity for 24 hours if they submit their request to the department.
Industrial zones, special economic zones and industrial and business establishments that receive electricity through a separate direct line and receive 24-hour power without power cuts will be charged 900 kyats per unit.
The revised electricity rates will take effect from February 1, 2026. - Eleven Media/ANN
