KUALA SELANGOR: The top leadership will make a collective decision on whether the PKR president and deputy president posts will be contested, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said he would not interfere in the matter ahead of the party’s upcoming elections.
“Let them (party leadership) decide. I won’t interfere. Let democracy take its course - whether there is a contest or not, they will decide on their own,” he told reporters when met after the groundbreaking ceremony of the Residensi Rakyat Programme (PRR) in Bestari Jaya here on Saturday (Feb 15).
PKR is reportedly considering not opening the positions of president and deputy president for the contest in its internal election, scheduled for May this year.
Anwar currently holds the party’s presidency, while Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli serves as deputy president.
The suggestion to keep the positions uncontested stems from internal discussions, according to PKR International Bureau Chairman Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, who also serves as Senior Political Secretary to Anwar.
“The view (from discussions) is to ensure internal stability within the party and to facilitate service to the people, given that the next general election is only about two years away,” Shamsul was reported as saying on Feb 1.
On Jan 26, PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh confirmed that the party elections will proceed on May 24, with contests open for the Central Leadership Council, Women’s Leadership Council and the Youth Leadership Council for the 2025-2028 term.
