Short circuit suspected in Melaka fire that killed five


A short circuit is believed to be the cause of the fire that resulted in five family members being burned to death in Kampung Berangan Enam, Umbai, Jasin, Melaka on Thursday (Feb 13).

MELAKA: A short circuit is believed to have caused a fire that resulted in the deaths of five family members, including a pregnant woman, in Kampung Berangan Enam, Umbai, Jasin, here on Thursday (Feb 13).

The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department Director Mohd Pisar Aziz told Sinar Harian that the old wiring system might have led to the short circuit, which destroyed the semi-brick and wooden house.

"At this initial stage, we do not rule out the possibility that a short circuit caused the fire. This is likely because many rural homes have outdated wiring systems that haven't been upgraded for decades," he told reporters on Friday (Feb 14).

He added that samples from the fire, including wood, fabric, wiring cables, and charred flooring, have been collected.

The samples were identified by Fire and REscue Department's K9 detection unit at the scene and have been sent to the Fire and Rescue Department Fire Investigation Forensic Laboratory in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, for analysis.

"We expect to receive the analysis results within two weeks."
