Religious teacher, three students among five killed in Jempol crash

JEMPOL: A 31-year-old religious teacher and his three students were among five people killed in a three-vehicle collision here.

District police chief Supt Hoo Chang Hook said the accident involving two cars and a pick-up truck happened just after 9pm on Wednesday (Feb 12) along KM6 on Jalan Bahau-Rompin near here.

Mohd Najmuddin Shapie, an imam at FGV Palong 18 mosque and his students Haziq Hakimi Mahindra, 19, and Muhammad Danish Iskandar Muhammad Faidzul, 18, and the driver of another car Lim Kwang Poh, 51, were killed on the spot in the crash.

Another one of the religious teacher's students and the brother of the 19-year-old victim, Muhammad Adi Putra, 16, died while receiving treatment at the Kuala Pilah Hospital.

Supt Hoo said a preliminary probe revealed that Lim, who was self-employed and from Melaka, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Mohd Najmuddin's car which was coming from the opposite direction.

Mohd Najmuddin and his students were then heading towards Bahau.

"A pick-up truck that was trailing Mohd Najmuddin's car could not stop in time and crashed into it," he said.

Supt Hoo said the 43-year-old driver of the pickup truck escaped injury.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged eyewitnesses to contact investigating officer Insp Muhammad Fasha Haiqal Mohd Faisal at 06 362 7746 to assist in investigations.
