PM Anwar defends maintaining Sosma as necessary against terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: The Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 is still needed as a measure against certain activities such as terrorism acts, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister justified that the Act should remain in force as activities such as terrorism could not be taken lightly.

“Our country is not exempted from terrorism attacks, we cannot take it lightly.

“There have been police officers who were shot to death and the perpetrator who did it was clear that his actions are based on the ‘responsibility’ that he must perform. In such cases, the law must be strict and firm.

“There are no other countries without similar laws, I do agree with Kota Melaka MP that the regulations (such as the repealed Internal Security Act 1960) must the clear and not be abused for other issues,” he said when replying to a supplementary question by Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong at the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Feb 13)
