PETALING JAYA: The last Saturday of September has been designated as Malaysia Cleaning Day.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming (pic) announced that the Cabinet has approved the annual programme to reduce pollution and boost cleanliness starting with a nationwide event this Sept 27, led by his ministry.
He said the initiative would be carried out using a nationwide approach, involving ministries, departments, federal agencies, state governments, local councils, educational institutions, private entities and other organisations.
“This is in line with the United Nations initiative, which designates Sept 20 as World Cleanup Day.
“Malaysia is now one of the top tourist destinations. Through this initiative, we aim to further enhance the country’s image as a clean and safe destination,” he added in a Bernama report yesterday.
Nga said last year’s Malaysia Cleanup Day was listed in the Malaysia Book of Records with the largest participation (58,007 people), most solid waste collected in a day (4,645.5 tonnes) and the longest gotong-royong programme (12 hours).
