PUTRAJAYA: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that further updates on social media licensing will be provided next week.
"Yes, I believe we will have more updates after the Thaipusam festivities," Fahmi stated during the weekly post-Cabinet meeting press conference on Friday (Feb 7).
Fahmi's comments came in response to questions about the latest developments from the government’s initiative on social media licensing.
On Jan 17, Fahmi mentioned that social media giant Meta is in the final stages of securing an Application Service Provider (ASP) Class Licence in Malaysia. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is completing documentation to fulfill specific legal requirements as part of the licensing process.
He noted that other platform providers, such as Google and X (formerly Twitter), are currently undergoing evaluations to assess their compliance status, although Google has argued that it is not a social media platform.
In a separate matter, Fahmi stated that the Cabinet did not discuss the US Justice Department's decision to close down its elite anti-corruption unit known for prosecuting the 1MDB scandal.
The Cabinet meeting also reviewed the outcomes of the recent official visits of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Malaysia. Fahmi highlighted that these visits strengthened diplomatic ties and opened new opportunities in trade, investment, and strategic cooperation.
"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has discussed the outcomes of the series of official working visits or state visits involving the President of Indonesia and the President of Uzbekistan.
"As a result of these two official visits, several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed to enhance relations between these nations and Malaysia, opening up business and investment opportunities," he added.
Additionally, Fahmi mentioned that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be visiting Malaysia next week.
