Bulgarian woman rescued while coming down Mt Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: A 64-year-old Bulgarian woman was rescued after she fell and injured her ankle while descending from the summit of Mount Kinabalu on Friday (Feb 7).

The incident occurred at KM7.2 of the trail, prompting a rescue operation from the Mountain Search and Rescue (MoSAR) unit of the Ranau Fire and Rescue Services Department, along with Sabah Parks rangers and health officials.

Ranau Fire Station chief Mohd Ridwan Mohd Taib said they received an emergency call at 7.58am, and the team, led by operations commander Mourice Ubin, was deployed and arrived at the scene at 8.34am.

“The victim had sustained an ankle injury after falling while making her descent from the peak. She was initially given first aid by a mountain guide before the rescue team arrived,” he said.

Ridwan said rescuers used a Robinson stretcher to carry the woman down the mountain.

She was transported to Timpohon Gate, the main entry and exit point for climbers, before being handed over to an ambulance for further treatment at the hospital.

Despite challenging terrain and continuous rainfall in the area, the rescue team managed to complete the operation safely by 1.15pm.

He urged climbers to be extra cautious, especially during wet conditions, and to seek immediate assistance if they encounter any difficulties during their climb.
