A time for togetherness


PETALING JAYA: As Malaysians celebrate Chinese New Year today, leaders from various political backgrounds have come together to emphasise the country’s cherished values of unity, harmony, and mutual respect.

In a Chinese New Year message, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed hope that the festive occasion would be celebrated joyfully by all Malaysians, transcending cultural and ethnic boundaries.

“Gewei laibin, dajia hao,” began Anwar, delivering his greetings in Mandarin through a video posted on his social media accounts.

“I would like to wish the Chinese community in Malaysia, xin nian kuai le (Happy Chinese New Year), guo nian hao (Celebrate the New Year joyfully), nian nian hao (May every year be a good year), and xin xiang shi cheng (May all your hopes be fulfilled),” he said.

Anwar reiterated his vision of fostering unity among Malaysians during the celebrations, emphasising that the Chinese New Year should not only be enjoyed by the Chinese community but also embraced by all Malaysians.

“I hope the Chinese New Year will be celebrated together with joy, in the spirit of togetherness and harmony,” he added.

Both Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof expressed optimism that the festivities would reinforce the national spirit.

“No matter what our background is, we are all Malaysians. The culture and traditions we share are not only our strength, but also a symbol of our pride as a harmonious nation.

“Let us come together to celebrate the spirit of unity, instil values of mutual respect, and make this Chinese New Year a meaningful moment in our journey to build a more prosperous and peaceful Malaysia,” said Ahmad Zahid.

Fadillah said unity and harmony among races are the foundation of the country’s stability, prosperity, and wealth.

“May this Year of the Snake further strengthen family ties and unity among us, and bring abundant happiness, increased fortune, and success to all.

“Always be grateful for the unity and harmony among the races that we enjoy in Malaysia, as it is the foundation of the country’s stability, prosperity, and wealth,” he said.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul urged Malaysians to embrace the values of transformation and agility to overcome obstacles and forge a future filled with progress.

“I am confident that together, we will be able to tackle the complexities of today’s world with resolve, seize new opportunities for innovation and collaboration to ensure that Malaysia and Asean remain a beacon of peace, progress and mutual prosperity for generations to come,” he said.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said being part of each others’ festive celebration is a testament to Malaysia’s strength as a multiracial nation.

“Harmony is the result of the people’s wisdom and maturity, where they can get along and live in peace while upholding the principles of the Rukun Negara,” he said.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan extended the party’s wishes to the Chinese community, hoping this year’s celebration brings joy, blessings and prosperity to everyone.

“This festival, along with the celebrations of other communities in our country serves as a powerful symbol of harmony and unity of a nation embracing the reality of diverse cultures, beliefs and backgrounds,” he said.

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali prayed for a year of success and greatness.

“May this year bring success, strength and endless opportunities while filling your days with warmth, happiness and cherished moments with loved ones,” he said.
