Prabowo: Issues can be resolved with political will

KUALA LUMPUR: President Prabowo Subianto is confident that Indonesia and Malaysia will be able to resolve long-standing bilateral issues, including those on borders and labour, in an orderly and efficient manner.

The Indonesian President said while these issues have been a topic of discussion between the two neighbouring nations for some time, they could be addressed effectively with the leadership’s political will to cooperate.

“Other matters can be resolved, and technical problems can be solved. What is important is that we have the political and strategic will.

“We are confident we can solve border and bilateral issues. Regarding labour issues, we have also agreed to regulate them,” he said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The press conference followed a four-eyed meeting and bilateral talks between Prabowo and Anwar at the PETRONAS Twin Towers.

Prabowo said both countries will also further collaborate in developing the palm oil industry, a crucial commodity with high demand from many countries.

On the geopolitical front, he said Malaysia and Indonesia must continue to engage in discussions to voice shared perspectives and synergy with other Asean partners.

“Only through unity among Asean countries and strong cooperation between us can our voices be heard by powers far greater than us.

“On the issue of Palestine, we firmly believe there is only one solution, which is the two-state solution. We welcome the current ceasefire and hope it will last,” he added.

This is the first state visit by Prabowo to a South-East Asian country since his inauguration as President on Oct 20 last year.

Earlier, Anwar and Prabowo witnessed the exchange of two letters of intent (LOI) between Axiata Group Bhd and Sinar Mas Tunggal, namely the “LOI on Ecosystem Growth” and the “LOI on XL Smart Merger Realisation”.
