‘I will resign if the PM wants me to,’ says Mat Sabu

KLANG: "That will be done if the Prime Minister orders [me to resign]."

This was the firm statement from the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu when asked about the call from former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Hanipa Midin to resign from Cabinet if the government blocks the anti-corruption rally on Saturday (Jan 25).

The Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president said Hanipa has the right to express his views in a country that practices democracy like Malaysia.

"He [Hanipa] is free to express his views and that is a right in a democratic world," he said at a press conference after officiating the Amanah Convention 2024 here on Saturday.

Previously, the media reported that Hanipa urged the Kota Raja Member of Parliament to resign if the government prevented the anti-corruption rally organised by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) in Kuala Lumpur.

The former Sepang Member of Parliament said he had spent a significant part of his life as a lawyer representing Mohamad, who was previously involved in a series of peaceful rallies.

Meanwhile, Mohamad clarified that Amanah does not prevent any of its party members from participating in the People's Anti-Corruption Rally.

"Anyone who wants to be involved [in the rally], there is no problem.

"Right now we [Amanah] have a convention, otherwise some might go. There is no issue [with joining] that," he added.

The rally will gather in front of Sogo shopping centre before marching along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and ending at Dataran Merdeka.
