Steps being taken to safeguard food security, says Mat Sabu

KUALA LUMPUR: Steps are being taken by the authorities to enhance Malaysia’s readiness to safeguard its food security amid the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East and the current hot weather, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu (pic).

The Agriculture and Food Security Minister said the ministry and all relevant agencies are focusing on enhancing supply management efficiency, strengthening the agro-food value chain and implementing mitigation measures to minimise the impact of external factors on the domestic market.

He said uncertainties in the global landscape would affect the global supply chain with higher oil prices and logistics costs ultimately impacting food prices, Bernama reported.

“At the same time, the country is facing challenges posed by hot weather and climate change, which could impact agricultural productivity and domestic food production,” he said in a Facebook post.

Mohamad gave his assurance that essential food supplies for this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration would remain stable, sufficient, and accessible at competitive prices.

He said this was the result of cooperation between his ministry, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, government agencies and the industry.
