Only certified electrical goods can be sold, say energy officials

KOTA KINABALU: Sellers of consumer electrical equipment are only allowed to sell electrical equipment recognised by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) or the Energy Commission Malaysia.

Ecos issued the notice after several shops in Putatan district were found to have been selling electrical appliances and equipment without the required certifications such as Ecos-Sirim or ST-Sirim safety labels.

During a joint operation between ECoS and Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd, it was found that shops were selling appliances, such as fans, kettles, ovens, light bulbs, extension sockets, wiring cables and power plugs without safety labels.

“Many sellers are unaware about public safety risks from selling consumer electrical equipment without ECoS and ST approval, which can cause property damage and endanger lives,” said ECoS director of safety and monitoring, Muhammad Azuan Zainuddin, who led the operation.

He added that there are consumers who buy unlabelled consumer electrical equipment because it is cheaper.

“The ECoS-Sirim and ST-Sirim safety labels are important to prove that the particular electrical equipment has been inspected and tested according to established standards and is safe to use,” he said.

Ridwan Saham, chief operating officer of ECoS, said the operation was held to educate retailers on their responsibility in regulating sales activities.

“This is to ensure that consumer electrical equipment sold meets the requirements of the Electricity Supply Enactment (EBE) 2024 and the Electricity Supply Regulations (PPBE) 2024.”

These regulations state that only approved consumer electrical equipment with the ECoS-Sirim, ST-Sirim safety labels and the ECoS Energy efficiency rating label can be sold to the public.

Enforcement operations and monitoring of the sale of consumer electrical goods are ongoing.
