MIRI: A 78-year-old woman died after being attacked and dragged by a crocodile while looking for snails with her daughter in a river near Batu Niah here Tuesday (Aug 11).
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said the incident occurred near the Suai Bridge, when Sambai Anggah was in a boat and her daughter was in the river, about 1m away from her.
"Her daughter witnessed the crocodile suddenly attack her mother and drag her about 10m away from the boat.
"Villagers who saw what happened surrounded the crocodile until it released the victim, who was then taken to the jetty," it said in a statement.
The department said it received an emergency call at 11.26am, and five personnel from the Batu Niah station arrived at the scene about 30 minutes later.
The operation ended at 1.45 pm, with the victim's body handed over to the police for further action. - Bernama
