KUALA LUMPUR: The inauguration of the 47th President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, was attended by ambassadors rather than top leaders from other countries, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
According to Malaysia's Ambassador to the US, the White House extended invitations to all embassy offices, and China was the only country invited to send its leader, who was represented by the Vice President.
Speaking to Astro Awani, Mohamed Nazri clarified that the invitation for the inauguration ceremony was sent by the US government to all embassies recently.
"As in the past, the accredited Heads of Mission to the United States, along with their spouses, will represent their respective heads of state and governments. This invitation is non-transferable," he quoted the invitation.
Mohamed Nazri's statement addresses some criticisms regarding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's absence from the ceremony.
Representing the Malaysian government, Mohamed Nazri attended the event wearing a traditional black baju Melayu and songkok.
Trump took the oath for a second term as President on Monday, marking a significant shift in the US administration that is expected to have a profound impact on American society and the world.
In his inaugural speech, Trump pledged to "put America first," ushering in a new chapter for the country.
Following the inauguration, Trump left the Capitol and headed to the Capital One Arena to address his supporters at a rally featuring a presidential parade.
