PETALING JAYA: The Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) condemns the act of splashing red paint on the doors of KK Mart at Kompleks Perdana Siswa (KPS) within the grounds of the University of Malaya (UM).
Its president, Lim Jing Jet, urged the university administration to conduct a transparent investigation and promptly address public concerns.
"This incident inevitably brings to mind the recent controversy surrounding KK Mart due to the 'ham and cheese sandwich' incident," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 21).
He said it was unclear whether the act related to that controversy.
"Vandalizing property may seem minor but could still fall under the offence of destruction of property as outlined in Section 425 of the Penal Code," he added.
As the deputy president of the UM Student Union (UMSU), Lim said the incident also raises concerns about campus security.
"If even a chain store like KK Mart can be vandalised within the campus area, what does this imply about other areas' safety and students' well-being?" he said.
Last week, a sandwich pack labelled "ham & cheese sandwich" sold at a KK Concept Store in Universiti Malaya sparked controversy because it featured the Malaysian halal logo.
On Jan 10, two KK Super Mart outlets in UM were closed on Jan 10 following inspections by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.
Jakim said the sandwich does not have an official halal certificate and that the company that produced it is not a Malaysia halal certificate (SPHM) holder.
In its statement, KK Super Mart said Shake And Bake Cafe had provided a halal certificate for the chicken ham and cheese layers for reference.
Shake And Bake Cafe was also not authorised to use the KK Super Mart logo on the sandwich packaging, KK Super Mart said.
