JPJ welcomes call for special court to handle serious accidents

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has welcomed proposals to establish a special court to handle serious road accidents, especially those involving fatalities.

Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the department would support such a move if the government decides to implement it.

"We would welcome the establishment of a separate court if there is a decision to do so," he said after a department gathering here on Friday (April 3).

However, Aedy Fadly acknowledged that the proposal could involve several implications, including financial costs and manpower requirements.

"We understand it will involve certain implications such as funding and manpower. But if it's going to be done, good," he added.

The proposal for a dedicated court has been raised in recent discussions following several high-profile road accidents involving deaths and serious injuries.

Aedy Fadly also said that JPJ and the Transport Ministry are reviewing and strengthening provisions under Sections 44 and 45 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deal with offences involving dangerous driving that results in death or injury while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
