Mydin MD says important to build unity, not clash over sandwiches

SUBANG JAYA: Mydin Hypermarket’s managing director said there should not be clashes over the "ham & cheese sandwich" controversy.

"We do not want to hear about the ham sandwich, we want to solve challenges and not to separate or fight," Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said during his speech at the launch of Mydin's Chinese New Year campaign here on Thursday (Jan 16).

He said that that there were too many remarks that do not promote unity being bandied about.

He said that last year, Mydin organised a campaign where winning customers were given a free lion dance performance at their homes.

Many of those who won were from Malay Muslim backgrounds and it created a healthy image of unity, he said.

"Interestingly, they were all very receptive," he said.

He said that this is important for buliding relationships between different communities.

"When the intentions are good, the reception is good," he said.

Earlier, it was reported that KK Super Mart had taken legal action against one of its food suppliers after a sandwich produced by the latter was found to have misused a Malaysian halal certificate.

On Jan 10, at noon, officers from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, together with Jakim, had also visited the factory where the sandwiches are made and the case is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.
