RM40mil funding to TAR UMT will be used to help deserving students, says Dr Wee in thanking PM Anwar

PETALING JAYA: The annual RM40mil government allocation to TAR UMT will provide affordable and high-quality education to deserving students, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA President and TARC Education Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the funding to benefit students from all backgrounds seeking quality tertiary education.

Dr Wee said that the government had transferred the allocation to TAR UMT’s bank account via online transfer on Wednesday (Jan 15).

"On May 29 last year, I wrote a letter to the Prime Minister requesting funding for TAR UMT in 2025.

“On Sept 18, when I led the MCA delegation to meet with the Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah to present our proposals for the 2025 Budget, I specifically mentioned the funding for TAR UMT,” he said on Facebook on Thursday (Jan 16).

“On Dec 3, before the 2025 Budget was read for the third time in the Dewan Rakyat, the Finance Ministry had already confirmed that TAR UMT would receive the RM40mil allocation, which was officially transferred on Wednesday.”

Dr Wee said that since its establishment, TAR UMT had received government funding and this year’s allocation was the third consecutive year that the Finance Ministry made the transfer in January.

“The TAR UMT Board of Trustees features four representatives from the Education Ministry and one from the Finance Ministry, which distinguishes TAR UMT from other universities."

"For many years, TAR UMT has made good use of government funding to provide high-quality tertiary education at affordable tuition fees, and to date, it has nurtured over 310,000 graduates,” he said.
